Pete to OBS, okbicycleliving, TeamBikeBuddies, Earth, NewOBC The Oklahoma Bicycling Coalition will hold a special meeting on March 2, 2008 at 1 PM to nominate and elect new officers and directors for the board. The meeting will be held at: Parks and Recreation 315 E 9th Stillwater, OK. Everyone who was a full member of the OBC for the years 2006, 2007 or 2008 will receive a packet by mail containing a letter from the Acting President, a membership form, and a nomination form. Full members from those years can nominate themselves or someone else for an office. They will be allowed to vote at the meeting. The only requirement is that nominees be full 2008 members to assume office. Member dues may be paid by mail or at the meeting prior to the call to order. If for any reason members who have paid 2008 dues are not satisfied with the results of the election their membership may be withdrawn and dues will be refunded. We hope that won't be the case. Please mail nomination forms and membership dues to: OBC Board c/o Cooper's Bicycle Center 220 South Main Street Stillwater, OK 74074 Please do not use the PO Box address for nominations and memberships. To do so will delay your submission. The Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition is at a critical point in its existence. There are many causes, reasons and accusations for this crisis. It is not the intent of the Acting Board to inflame the issue. Rather the Board is turning to the general membership to find the solution. The first order of business will be to elect new officers and directors. The entire board's term expired at the end of 2007 with no elections. It is the members who must shape and define the future role of the OBC. The Agenda for the meeting and the nomination form are posted on the official OBC website www.okbike.org in case your address has changed or you don't receive the nomination packet by mail. I hope you will be able to come to the meeting, volunteer for a leadership role, and help revitalize the Oklahoma Bicycling Coalition. Sincerely, Pete Kramer 405 Representative 2006/2007 ps: I do not have access to many of the bicycling lists in Oklahoma. This notice has been sent to NewOBC, OBS, OEF, OK Bicycle Living, and TeamBikeBuddies. Please forward to additional lists to which you subscribe. We saw several people on our way, a few cyclists but mostly kids and young people. On our way back we turned into the neighborhood that you have to go through while the trail is closed for the Gilcrease construction. There were 4 black teenage boys walking in the middle of the street and they must have heard us because they stepped apart (2 on each side) for us to ride through and just as we passed them the tallest one ran up to the back of Brenda's bike and kicked her tire trying to knock her down. Fortunately, she was able to maintain control and stay upright. I thought he'd thrown something at us and then I heard him running behind me and when I turned around to look I saw him reaching out to try and either catch me or kick me. Then he said, "Hey white bitch, I'm gonna slap your face!" We were riding faster by then but he was running as fast as he could and I could hear his feet slapping the pavement as he chased us. I didn't think I was going to be able to out ride him but finally he stopped and we got away. It was a terrifying experience. We didn't call the police but I think I will call tomorrow and report the incident (does anyone know the name of that street through the neighborhood?). Also we noticed that there was glass numerous places along the trail that hadn't been there when we rode out. It's unfortunate to have a trail that nice and then have it trashed and/or be terrorized by hoodlums. This is to warn everyone to be very careful if you choose to ride that route. Brenda and I will never ride on that trail again. It is too dangerous. I would call the police to make them aware of it so they can have record of it. I would also call the Mayor's action line and make them aware of this incident. We need to make some "noise" about this stuff. Also, any incidents on the trail or streets that occur should be put in the Link so fellow bike riders will be aware of them. These terrorists need to be apprehended, brought to justice and removed from society. Meanwhile, the word must be passed by any means to warn everyone to avoid the Osage Prairie Trail except in good-sized groups able to defend themselves. This trail is too beautiful to be lost to vandals and terrorists. On the Liberty Parkway Trail near Broken Arrow there is a sign recommending that persons use the trail with another person. Signage such as this on the Osage might be necessary. If legal help is needed in this matter, I'm sure many would be willing to contribute to a TBC effort in that regard. She said she would send it to the North Tulsa Division and perhaps when they read it they will start patrolling that area more. She didn't sound too positive. Afterwards, her suggestion was that I find someplace else to ride. Also, I had forgotten that I had also ridden that trail with another friend about a month ago on a Monday afternoon and while waiting for traffic at a cross street I was approached by a black woman in the company of 2 or 3 black men and she was asking for money. She stood right in front of my bike and I had to refuse her several times before she would move out of my way. In addition, today I sent a letter to The Editor of The Tulsa World and ask them to publish it without my name. I don't know if they will or not. I am also sending a copy to the Parks Department. Abby Ross of Channel 8 called Brenda Rollins today and said she was going to do a piece on The Osage Trail and after hearing about our incident from Carol Bush wants to interview Brenda. If that all comes together it should be on the 5 or 6 o'clock news on Channel 8 tomorrow evening. Maybe this will bring about more public awareness of the dangers on Osage Trail...Eve "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. By KRISTINA DUDLEY World Staff Writer 2/27/2008 Mike Montgomery started riding a bike when he was diagnosed with adult onset diabetes in 2002. "I wanted to control it and lose weight, so I just bought a bike and started riding," Montgomery said. Although cycling started out as a fitness program, the Tulsa Bicycle Club is also a hobby for Montgomery. "My wife claims my bike is my second girlfriend," he said. He enjoys the social aspect of the club and the different scheduled rides. In 2007, he rode about 5,500 miles on his bike. He said that has been typical mileage for the past three or four years. The club holds monthly informational meetings including ones on rider safety, bike maintenance and bike tours. It also assists with the annual Oklahoma FreeWheel, a weeklong cross-state ride in early June, and holds weekly events for beginning, moderate and strenuous rides, said Jenny Kucera, public relations coordinator. "Whatever pace you're looking for, we can match you with your experience and skill," Kucera said. Although some riders join to prepare for competitions, most of the club events are family-oriented and aimed at leisure riders, she said. Kucera, a member since 2000, said she joined to be with other recreational bicyclists and have new places to ride. "I was looking for others who enjoyed biking as much as I do," she said. Member Mike Schooling joined the club after he met some members during a FreeWheel event. "I had gotten back into cycling a couple of years prior, so it was a fitness-related issue, and it was to help rehabilitate my knee," Schooling said. He is now program director for the bike club and serves on the board of directors for FreeWheel Inc. He enjoys the camaraderie in the Tulsa Bicycle Club and believes it is a valuable organization. Member Wayne Mark has been cycling for 30 years and has enjoyed riding with the club since 2005. "I moved to the Tulsa area, and the first thing I did was find a bike club," Mark said. Tulsa Bicycle Club meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road. Membership is $17 a year. Yes sometimes I encounter impossible combinations of tyre and rim, but more often I see people who can't even fit a tyre without a lever which I can remove without. a proper procedure helps, and even if you still use a lever it will make it much easier on you and your equipment. to remove a tyre: # Remove the wheel and deflate the inner tube completely. Push the valve inwards to break it free, you might have to remove a locknut to do this # The tyre beads are often stuck to the rim: go round and push both beads towards the middle of the rim # Grab the tyre at the valve with one hand, and lift the wheel. Try to put some tension on the tyrebead by canting the tyre backwards. Starting at the bottom squeeeze the tyre into the rimwell and work your way up. Do this for boths sides and you will see the gap between rim and tyrebead at the top increasing. Keep some tension on the tyre at all times so that the bead will not slip back # If you're handy and the wheel cooperates you often have enough room now to ease the bead over the rim (use both hands) , but if not insert two tyre levers 2" left cq right from the valve underneath the tyrebead # fold the tyre levers over (one at a time), if you need a lot of force, retry after you have pushed the tyre bead back in the rim well # If the tyre bead is still tight after you have flipped a section over the rim , remove one lever (hold on to the other one) and use it to fold back another 1-2" Always start removing the bead near the valve, this way the bead won't have to slalom around the valve which takes up valuable clearance -- mvg From giantcycle99 at gmail.com Wed Feb 27 17:35:33 2008 From: giantcycle99 at gmail.com (Moni) Date: Wed Feb 27 17:36:00 2008 Subject: [tbc] Re: tire levers In-Reply-To: <20080227230305.PJZU1135.eastrmmtao104.cox.net@eastrmimpo02.cox.net> References: <99d35d20802271419s79b0ed4bwd5732dbbb8c0f2c@mail.gmail.com> <20080227230305.PJZU1135.eastrmmtao104.cox.net@eastrmimpo02.cox.net> Message-ID: <99d35d20802271535m26a20ea9jaa9eebc2bf594e1f@mail.gmail.com> > Is he talking about a 'tire'?
