GRRnews: The Blumenkrantz Ride

In mid-June of 2007 Philip Blumenkrantz from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania flew into Tulsa International Airport, put his bicycle together and pedaled to Jenks. Over the next several days, without support, he pedaled to and stayed in Okmulgee, Muskogee, Locust Grove, Claremore, Bartlesville, Pawhuska, Pawnee, and Sand Springs. Phil knew what he was doing, months earlier he had written me asserting “I've ridden over 10,000 miles on approximately 25 one-to-three week trips in the US, Canada (and one trip through the France's Burgundy region).”

He and I had first been connected via the Bicycles of Tulsa web site and by my friends Mark and Stella LeMieux. Phil had found the site and written asking for information. Stella called me and I offered to help. Phil wrote me
“Thanks for your response. I'll look forward to any help you can give me in planning my route …”
Over the next months I had fun making maps and offering my advice for Phil’s upcoming ride. A long distance respect and friendship developed between the two of us and we finally met for breakfast at Village Inn when he had finished his loop through northeast Oklahoma circumnavigating Tulsa.

He wrote later, “That said, I really had fun in Oklahoma. Hadn't done a solo bike trip in some time and this fueled the fever.”

At some point Phil suggested, “I'm contemplating a north-south US trip on US 83 from Minot, North Dakota to Brownsville, Texas.”

He and I have now talked about doing this together (but perhaps in the opposite direction). Is anyone else interested in a border-to-border south-north cross-country endeavor?

Why am I reporting all of this? Phil recently sent me some of the photographs he took while doing his self-contained motel-to-motel ride in Oklahoma. I thought many of you would find it interesting to see the pictures he chose to take. He is a good photographer and about a dozen images are included. Hope you enjoy.
