Their plan is to ride their tandem to Kansas City from my house (near 71st and Yale), self contained over several days. Their first overnight will be near Ketchum. I am not to sure about riding route 66 between Catoosa and Claremore. Has anyone ridden that stretch? Would you tell me your feelings about riding there? I know there is a map for a loop from Mohawk to Claremore and back, I have even ridden it. I have sent them the link to this map. -- Moni From htt98 at aol.com Wed Sep 5 22:03:17 2007 From: htt98 at aol.com (Howard Thornhill) Date: Wed Sep 5 22:08:55 2007 Subject: [tbc] GRRnews: The Blumenkrantz Ride Message-ID: <8C9BE38D830432F-FE4-6B3C@MBLK-M28.sysops.aol.com> ? ? We will begin this year in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. From Tulsa, Sallisaw is only 90 miles ? south down the Muskogee Turnpike and then east on Interstate 40. It is an easy one and one-half hour drive from my place. We will leave our vehicles at very nice KOA Park, which is about three-fourths of a mile south on Highway 59 at the exit 308 from Interstate 40. Watch carefully as the KOA sign is on the east side, yet the street to turn on is on the west side. Those of us who wish to go down on Wednesday, October 17 are most welcome to camp there that night. This is a pleasant clean, grassy green park and is well managed by a helpful lady named Sandy. During the next three nights we will camp twice on Kerr Lake at Corps of Engineers parks, both of which have reasonable clean restrooms, hot showers, and lots of grass. I have talked with the Kerr Lake ranger and like so many others he, Chad, is being helpful to our little group. On the middle of these three nights the archeologist at Spiro Mounds, a knowledgeable gentleman my the name of Dennis, has agreed to allow us to set up camp next to a berm and the two picnic tables out in front of the Museum. And the Mounds are within easy walking distance. Might be good night for meditation ? or ghost stories? I also think you will like and be impressed my Dennis. In the few minutes of conversation he and I had, I decided that I could listen to him tell stories about the Spiro Native American people for hours. For a group meal, on one of the evenings while we are out, I am planning to prepare several quarts of my ?Cheddar Cheese Potato Soup?. And Jack has agreed to fix his celery, nuts, and cranberry salad. We will probably do this on Friday evening at Spiro Mounds. Others of you may want to supply crackers or drinks or desert. Mileage the first day is a bit less than 20. The next three days will be around 25 or so. I did not find a dirt road for this year; however, I did find Wild Horse Mountain Road ? and way out in the boonies the several miles of this road does have about one block of loose gravel. But this road is worthwhile, for it keeps us from pedaling up and over Wild Horse Mountain! We will start pedaling on Thursday, October 18 and return to our vehicles on Sunday, October 21. Similarly to the past few years, Jack is still planning to be driving and acting as our emergency lifeline. There will probably be others whose current or past health issues are preventing them from pedaling this year. These former OCTOK riders remain most welcome to camp and be with us. The main plan is for all to have fun. BY CONSENSUS: SOME OCTOK PARTICULARS an October ride on Oklahoma roads ? ? We did go into Texas for one night a couple of years ago and several years ago we pedaled down the Arkansas side of the state line. We may go into Kansas sometime in the future. a self-contained ride ? ? Participants are expected to pedal his or her complete load on their bike. Exceptions may be made for former GRRiders with medical issues. Exceptions may also be for firewood, etc. includes some non-TBC members ? ? One lady from Kansas often joins us. Most who are already planning to go on OCTOK this year are TBC members. Newcomers are welcome. no fees ? ? We do however share common campground costs (and sometimes the expense of a group meal). no sag ? ? The experience of being self-contained is an essential part of our shared adventure; but we do stop to help our fellow riders whenever needed. emergency vehicle ? ? In an emergency (accident, sever weather, etc.) we may solicit help from any source. no hotels ? ? However, we have been known make a group decision to hole up in a motel or cabin when the weather was really bad. fun is required ? ? The camaraderie of friends (old and new) riding and camping together is a good thing. will start ? ? We plan to start pedaling from Sallisaw on Thursday, October 18, 2007, by about ten o?clock and should be back to our cars by mid-afternoon on Sunday, October 21. You are welcome to call or email for more details Howard Thornhill at 918-665-3862 or _htt98@aol.com_ (mailto:htt98@aol.com) Hope many of you will choose to RSVP and come ride with us! The committee is broken down into three groups, one focusing on construction methods and practices, one focusing on funding, and last but not least one considering the citizen's needs including those with disabilities, pedestrian use, neighborhood needs and cyclists. As a Civil Engineer specializing in traffic/transportation I applied for and was accepted onto the panel. First and foremost I want to suggest what I feel is best for the city as a citizen and engineer, but secondly as a cyclist. If anyone has any suggestions, concerns or wants I beg for your opinion! And especially if anyone (I KNOW their are some hard core advocates out there) knows of any comparable cities that have incorporated successful bicycle infrastructure please pass it on! I realize of course only so much can be done, but for the time being I'm really excited and invite my cycling community to help out! One is right here near Tulsa, the other at Lake Eufaula. Maybe I will see you there? -- Moni OBS Campout Weekends Fall Fling (October 6) features one of the flattest 60 mile routes for a weekend ride that we've ever had. We will be camping at Lake Keystone, at Lake Country Campground. There will also be the option of driving 10 miles to Sand Springs and making it a 40 mile route or driving even further to one of the Tulsa City River trail parking areas for an even shorter ride. Jenks is our destination for lunch and a possible visit to the Oklahoma Aquarium. The cost is $13.95 per adult ($2.00 less for seniors) and it is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Maps will be handed out Saturday morning. Sunday's ride to Sapulpa for brunch is a more challenging 40 ? 45 mile route. Both rides will start at 9:00 a.m. at Keystone State Park in the Lake Country camping area. Tour de Trees is the weekend of October 20th at Dogwood Drive Campground in Eufaula State Park. Exit 259 off I-40 to Hwy 150, go south 3 ? miles. The campground is on the west side of the road. Route distance is 62 miles and there is a hilly 50 mile cutoff or you can ride out and back as far as you wish. Maps will be handed out prior to the 9:00 a.m. start. Sunday's plan will be a ride to Checotah for brunch. There are several ways to approach an OBS campout weekend. Many will arrive on Friday night, set up camp and either cook dinner at camp or drive to an area restaurant. Some will arrive on Saturday morning for the ride and set up camp for just one night or may drive home that evening. But no one wants to miss the world famous OBS Saturday night Pot Luck extravaganza. Bring a dish to share and see what delectable treats are in store for your dining pleasure. A camp chair, your own plates, silverware and beverage will add to your comfort. Since we don't have a pavilion arranged for these two events, please bring a portable table if you have one. A ride to brunch on Sunday morning is a great way to end the weekend. If camping doesn't sound fun to you, there are area hotels in Eufaula and Keystone offers 22 cabin units (918-865-4991). You won't want to miss out on all the fun. Enjoy fall in Oklahoma!
