(June 4, 2007) -- More than 220 courageous athletes are set to attempt the Race Across America (RAAM) later this month, in a non-stop, coast-to-coast race that will pass over two major mountain ranges, through the desert and across the American plains, and into the face of the severest weather patterns on the North American continent. Now in its 26th year, the legendary event, known as the "world's toughest endurance race," inspires men and women of all ages, who spend a year out of their mostly ordinary lives training for the monumental challenge of pedaling across the United States to test the utmost limits of their physical strength, mental spirit, resilience and commitment. This year's notable field includes 46 men and women over the age of 50, cyclists living with diabetes and transplanted organs, and one man with a prosthetic leg. "The Race Across America represents a victory over fear, weakness, hardship and even disease," said Fred Boethling, a cancer survivor who, at 61, became the oldest man to finish Solo RAAM in 2006. "It offers racers the opportunity to work towards an ambitious personal goal, while drawing in others to give back to the community." Time stations spaced every 50 miles along the 3,043-mile route offer a spot for racers to check in, teams to switch riders on the road, support crews to regroup, members of the media to gather interviews, and spectators to cheer on these incredible athletes. This year's Solo division promises an especially dramatic race with the return of three former RAAM winners: 2006 champion Daniel Wyss, 2004 and 2005 winner Jure Robic, and 1997, 2000 and 2002 winner Wolfgang Fasching, who has taken no less than third place every year since his Rookie of the Year honor in 1996. This year also sees the largest Solo Women's race category in RAAM history, with five women going for gold, one of them at the age of 60. Team categories will also offer up their share of suspense, as men and women, aged 18-74, join up as teams of two, four or eight, to share the pedaling across the country and attempt to finish in five to seven days (compared with the 8-12 days of a Solo effort). Their experience, and RAAM itself, is made possible by hundreds of volunteers around the country who staff time stations and work on racer support crews. Each support crew includes 8-12 people and two vehicles, one to follow the rider on the road and the other to check the route, track the competition, run errands, and provide sleeping quarters. For those inspired by the challenge but lacking the time off, RAAM offers a 24-hour race on its first 500 miles, from Oceanside, Calif. to Flagstaff, Ariz. Competition for first place will be fierce among this year's four teams of eight, who must maintain high speeds for a "short" but grueling course that includes 22,000 vertical feet of climbing. The end result is millions of dollars raised for more than 30 charities around the world, chosen by racers who fundraise as passionately as they train, incorporating publicity events into their training schedule, naming an honorary pedal partner (often a child) and setting serious goals of raising more than $100,000. Follow the route and the action on the RAAM website's "live coverage," an exciting, new feature launching Sunday, June 10. This online report will be updated every 30 minutes -- 24 hours per day -- with news and photos: http://www.raceacrossamerica.org. About the Race Across America (RAAM) The Race Across America, known as the "world's toughest bicycle race", will set over 215 competitors on a 3,043-mile route stretching from Oceanside, California to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Athletes race continuously day and night, on their own power or sharing the challenge with a team, and a crew of 8 -15 people following in support cars with food and supplies for the race. These courageous adventurers brave heat, wind, thunderstorms, altitude, the dark of night, fatigue, and sleep deprivation, cross two major mountain ranges, and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. The race is under new ownership in 2007. The new management team is comprised of long-time veterans of past RAAMs who have demonstrated a heartfelt commitment to the race via their years of racing, crewing, officiating, and volunteer leadership. I miss my dad. I have been back home in Portland for three whole days after my whirlwind visit to Tulsa last week and I miss my dad already. I am dumbfounded. I followed my typical Tulsa travel routine: booked my ticket several months in advance to allow myself plenty of anticipation time; carefully thought out everything that I wanted to do with Dad while I was there; our usual trail run at Turkey Mountain, maybe a ride on the tandem, some intense food consumption and cooking (usually prepared by the man, himself) and a lot of talking, catching up and laughing; and packed the essentials necessary for a trip home - all of the athletic apparel I own. My visit last week was notably different for us. Dad was intensely dedicated to two specific tasks; executing Tulsa Tough and planning a family reunion the weekend directly following the event. What you may not have realized is that his time in between the two tasks was spent following up (mostly in person) with local businesses, fellow event organizers/volunteers and participants, and soliciting feedback for improvements to next year's Tulsa Tough weekend. The man never stopped. My time with Dad is never enough. I am without fail always left desperately craving more and more moments with him and I often find myself daydreaming back to the summers when the two of us would plop ourselves on the couch in our home to watch Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen (and now, the irrepressible Bob Roll) recount the intense drama and athleticism that is the Tour de France. I'm sure you would all agree that it is one of the most bring you to your knees athletic events around. I absolutely love it, and Dad deserves all the credit for my life shifting introduction to le Tour. These are the moments that shaped who I am; sitting on the couch with Dad obsessively watching every stage of every tour; beaming with pride witnessing Dad organize event after event for Tulsa and its residents (Maple Ridge Run; Cherry Street Mile; Tulsa Tough); not to mention cheering for Dad in local triathlons, runs, bike races, etc. He is why I am who I am and why I am where I am. So, let's get to business, shall we? I could hardly believe my eyes today when I received an email from a fellow Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) enthusiast and NIKE employee extending an opportunity to all NIKE employees who are LiveStrong Ride participants to experience the Tour firsthand this year! The catch? To be the top NIKE employee fundraiser. Yes, this is an amazing opportunity to fundraise for the LAF, but how phenomenal would it be if I could, on behalf of all of the people who love, respect and appreciate my dad as much as I do, give him this once in a lifetime experience to see the tour firsthand? I have two weeks (until June 29th) to work hard and raise as much as I can to win this trip for him. If you are feeling inspired to send Dad to France or would like to support the LAF, please follow the link below to make a donation to my LiveStrong Campaign webpage and please also forward this message to others you feel would appreciate my message. No amount is too small - and the best news is that all fundraising will go directly to the LAF regardless if we score the trip for Dad. We can do this together!!! http://portland07.livestrong .org/katiemccollam Very sincerely yours, Katie McCollam Grants Administrator | Nike Foundation | t +1.503.671.2043 f +1.503.532.0456 e katie.mccollam@nike.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Hello TBC and Bartlesville Pedalers. Just a quick note to provide details regarding this Saturday's TBC ride, a joint ride between the Tulsa Bicycle Club and the Bartlesville Pedalers. I've dubbed the ride the "Gone With The Wind" ride in honor of the June 30th, the 71st anniversary of the publishing of Margaret Mitchell's famous novel (actually, her only novel, "... frankly Scarlett, I don't give a ...", you know the rest!). Seemed appropriate for a ride through the Osage hills. Guess it's more likely that it will be "gone with the rain" this Saturday, but we'll hope for clear weather! If it's raining, the ride will revert to a "show-up" ride with those "showing up" determining the route, etc. WHERE: The ride will start in the thriving metropolis of Ramona, OK. Ramona is about a 35 minute drive north of downtown Tulsa on Hwy 75. WHEN: Assemble for an 8:00am departure, Saturday morning, June 30th, 2007. PARKING: When you exit Hwy 75, turning east into Ramona on Wyandotte, proceed about a quarter mile east just beyond the school buildings. There's ample parking on the left on the east side of the school. For those not familiar with the turn off of Hwy 75, there's an American Bank of OK on the northwest corner at this intersection with a big (very big) American flag. You'll turn right (east) into Ramona at this point. ROUTE: Route maps will be provided, but here's a Google map of the route if you'd like to preview it - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1079032 DISTANCE: 44 miles plus change OVERVIEW: >From Ramona, we'll travel west on county roads to Hwy 11 north of Avant. Lots of "views" from high in the Osage Hills; beautiful country. Then we'll turn south, take Old State Hwy 11 into Avant, then Broadway out of town and up Javine Hill Rd. We'll turn off Javine Rd onto Phillips Rd for a ride on this narrow, winding, but pretty road into Skiatook. Phillips Rd has two cattle guards, but they're in good shape and ridable ... just be careful if it's wet! Phillips Rd is a tree-covered, narrow country lane and we'll be going downhill a lot. Be cautious, but enjoy the ride. We'll travel east through Skiatook on Hwy 20 to N. Peoria where we'll head back north. At 186th St N we'll head east again, curve north onto W 4000 Rd and stay on it across Hwy 75 to N Memorial (N 4000 Rd). Then we'll travel north through Vera and back to Ramona. The first half of the route his hilly with three or four significant climbs (for me anyway) and the second half is nearly flat. There's a small store in Avant, plenty of stores and fast food places in Skiatook, and a couple of stores in Ramona for refueling before, during and after the ride. Much, most, of this ride follows one of the Tulsa Tough routes, so you'll be seeing a lot of "Tuf" markings on the road. There are only a couple of spots where we won't be following these markings. Just look for my "blue" Dan Henry markings for our route. Visit the Adventure Bicycle Center after the ride! After the ride, since you're only a short distance from Bartlesville, you might want to go on into B'Ville and visit the Adventure Bicycle Center. Randall Clayborn, owner and operator of ABC, will be sagging our ride, so you might want to check out what he has to offer at his shop. I think they close at 2pm on Saturdays, so take that into consideration if your ride is a leisurely one. See ya there! I think that's it? Oh, the route is "Lightly Marked" in light blue paint for the Dan Henry markings. All major turns are marked, but there aren't many/any confirming marks on long straight stretches. But it's a pretty straight-forward route, so I don't think anyone will be getting lost! Let me know if I've forgotten anything ... and I'll see you Saturday where we'll be "Gone With The Wind!" I also will have some of the usual small goodies to pass out. (Mike Schooling gets sooo excited about Espresso Love Gu!) So go to www.roadid.com and start thinking about what you may want to get in case you win! They have lots of neat-o accessories too. I will wear my Road-ID to show you an example of ID to keep you safe (with peace-of-mind for family) on your next ride (and it ties in to last month's TBC First Aid speaker too) We hope to be linking up with the Wheelmen again. It's nice to be able to have inter-club things like this! Sharon Henry should be putting the finishing touches on the Travelin' Trophy. I know she is quite eager to get rid of ---er, I mean, pass on--- this delightful conversational piece. You, too, could be the lucky one to temporarily house this work of art (trash)! Just so ya know, if you win the trophy, you must add on some other artifact you found while cleaning Avery Drive. BUT you have to show up at the next ADCU to pass it on. So we'll see Sharon out there at least, right Sharon?! (((Hmmm we do find some rather interesting things out there, don't we?! Plenty of choices with which to augment the trophy, eh?!))) As for the post-clean-up festivities: you will have an option of a bike washing party at my house, which is very close by, or we can do a ride from my house either to Shell Lake or out Coyote Trail. Or head south to Lake Sahoma. BYOB if you'd like. I will provide bike-cleaning paraphernalia, shade, a 10-foot wide breezy porch with a restful view of a pretty "mountain" in our neighborhood, some lawn chairs, rocking chairs, (and a potty in case you BYOB to excess). My kids (AKA "my little minions") should be able to help cool you down with their errant water hose trajectories. If you're lucky they will clean your bike for you too! So if your bike is yucky from Freewheel and you're temporarily sick of cycling, come on by the house after we get Avery all pretty again! If you are still rarin' to go ride, the hills unfurl out my front door step! ~Carolyn (I live at 137th W Ave and 41st street in the second cul-de-sac of Spring Lake Mountain Estates in case you meet up with us for the bike washing only) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
