I guess it's due to the Tisdale freeway extension. At the present time, you can walk around this barricade and continue. There doesn't appear to be any activity in this area right now. The trail hasn't been dug up or anything. However, about a half a mile north of Mohawk, there a huge drainage pipe setting on the trail that riders will have to walk around. Message-ID: 5.? SCOTT'S SPIN:? Liar, Liar I sure hope Lycra isn't flammable. Because -- judging by a lot of what we roadies say -- our pants could catch on fire. Add these gems to the vocabulary of sneaky things said (and what's really meant): "It's not that hilly" This climb lasts longer than a presidential campaign. Be careful on the steep sections or you'll fall over -- backward. You have a 39x23-tooth low gear? Here's the name of my knee surgeon. "This energy bar tastes like real food" This energy bar tastes like real dog food. "You're doing great, honey" Yo, lard-o, I'd like to get home before midnight. This is what you get for spending the winter watching football and gobbling Sausages. I shoulda married that cute Cat 1 when I had the chance. "It's not that windy" Yes, that was a mobile home cartwheeling by. No, they're not supposed to be that mobile. "I was just riding along when it broke" I rode down a flight of stairs on my 398-gram race wheels. I drove into the garage with my bike on the roof. I decided to save weight by filing the rails on my saddle. "This is a no-drop ride" I'll need an article of your clothing. It's for the search-and-rescue dogs. "The proprietary Carbonium tubing yields a stiff yet compliant ride" This bike feels exactly like the 14 gazillion others produced in a monster factory in Taiwan, but our marketing guy had to come up with something to justify the $4,000 price tag. "It's not that far" Yes, it is. (Scott Martin wrote feature articles for Bicycling magazine for a dozen years. Many times I feel like riding beside my riding buddies just so we can talk, but then there is the problem of being a nuisance to cars. I was wondering if anyone had tried walkie talkies and if there are any good hands free types that would be worth it? It sounds like a good idea, but I wanted some input before I went and got some. We used a pair of Motorolas family talk radios with a 5 mile range. There was a hands-free voice activation feature. Scenario 1: We had just started getting tired of trails and were ready to graduate to the streets. I rode to work, and he was worried about me riding on the streets alone, and wanted to make sure I got there okay. My breathing and the wind kept activating it, like pressing the talk button, and all he could hear was the activation beep and air movement. Because you can only transmit one side of the conversation at a time, he couldn't get through to talk to me. Within half a mile, the buildings and/or hills interfered, and he couldn't hear me at all. Scenario 2: We rode the Katy trail in Missouri, a 255 mile fully supported ride. We couldn't stand the constant beeping from the voice activation feature, so we turned that off. We carried them in our back pockets, and the beep was loud enough to hear without headphones, so we ended up using the beeps as a code. We'd reach behind and press the talk button once to mean "pull over when you get a chance", or twice to mean "urgent". Some of the motorcycle helmets have radios built in, but I don't know how they manage to use them, and why that can't be translated into bicycle-friendly radios. Anyone else know more about it? __o _-\<,_ September Brown (_)/ (_) gregb@netwrx1.net Sometimes it's a little better to travel than to arrive. -Robert Pirsig ----- Original Message ----- ....I was wondering if anyone had tried walkie talkies and if there are any good hands free types that would be worth it? They seem to be a good idea at first but they will have problems on the road. First, battery life is not great. Be prepared to take a lot of batteries in your luggage. The models I have seen take four AA batteries. Their range is not good either. It may be advertised as five miles but in hills, it may be less than one. More importantly, they are a another distraction and we do not need more of those riding bikes. Most of us have followed someone in a car talking on a cell phone, going 10 miles an hour under the speed limit, weaving in and out of traffic. I consider bike riding to be more of a "hands on" activity than even driving a car. You have to look out for pot holes, railroad tracks, gravel hazards, road conditions, other cyclists and motorists, dogs, etc, etc. And the other person you are talking to has to look out for those things, too. Do we need another distraction? A cell phone may be a somewhat better solution if you pull off the road while you talk with your friend. Cell phones are more easily rechargeable and may serve as a more useful tool in an emergency situation or just to phone home during the week of FreeWheel. Richard Hall ----- Original Message ----- From: Lisa Frankenberger To: tbc@rootwizard.net Sent: Monday, February 12, 2007 3:27 PM Subject: [tbc] Walkie talkies? Hi everyone, The other day me and a friend were riding and as I'm sure you all know we were doing the yell at each other thing, the what thing, then the forget it or pull over thing. But a more correct answer according to New Scientist magazine is 'active control through steering'. It's called Curran and it's made from microscopic fibres extracted from carrots. Up to 2kgs of carrots, which are 90% water, are needed to make a single fishing rod weighing just a couple of ounces, so count on a trailer-full for your future bike frame. They were talking about it on another list, saying that it would be perfect for cycling, and the only thing missing was the GPS. I haven't seen any bike mounts advertised yet, but it has a phone, ipod, computer, and more, all sharing the same battery and speakers for reduced weight. It's supposed to have a touch screen, which should be easier to use than buttons. I'm thinking if it had a handlebar mount, you could dial with one hand, and put it on speakerphone. Still not as safe as pulling over, but it would be handy to quickly answer a call if another rider tried to reach you, then you could tell them to hang on while you pulled over. Speaking of phones and bikes, Avon's new men's catalog has a neat little gadget for sale. It's a radio / flashlight / cell phone charger with a hand crank. You wind it up for 30 seconds, and you get about 15 minutes of talk time on your cell phone. It might be good to take on Freewheel or other extended rides. It comes with cords for five different brands of phones. September ----- Original Message ----- I really appreciate everyone's input about the walkie talkies.
